Gov’t Releases GH¢8.9m Feeding Grant for Special Needs Schools

The Government of Ghana has disbursed GH¢8,989,866.00 as a feeding grant for Special Needs Schools across the country, in what the Ghana Education Service (GES) describes as a reaffirmation of the state’s dedication to inclusive and equitable education.

The announcement was made in an official press release signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the GES. According to the release, the funds are intended to support feeding costs for learners in all special needs institutions nationwide. “This disbursement demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to inclusive education and the wellbeing of learners with special needs,” the statement emphasized.

Earlier Crisis Averted by MP’s Timely Support

This government intervention mirrors earlier efforts by Abuakwa South Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, who recently came to the aid of Kibi School for the Deaf amid a looming feeding crisis. The Eastern Region-based school had reported a severe food shortage due to delays in government grants, placing hundreds of students at risk of hunger.

In response, Dr. Agyemang donated GH¢45,200 to cover food costs for the students until the end of the academic term in July. “It is heartbreaking to learn that the children might go hungry from today till the end of the term,” the MP said during a modest but emotional presentation ceremony at the school.

This personal intervention not only averted a crisis but highlighted the broader challenges facing special education in Ghana. The donation was received with gratitude by school authorities and sparked conversations about the need for consistent and timely support for vulnerable learners.

A Model for Collaborative Impact

Gov’t Releases GH¢8.9m Feeding Grant for Special Needs Schools

The GES expressed appreciation for the resilience and patience of school heads, staff, and learners in special needs institutions, adding that it welcomes continued collaboration with all stakeholders. The release of the GH¢8.9 million grant is expected to provide significant relief to these schools, many of which have struggled with limited resources in recent months.

Stakeholders in the education sector have praised the joint efforts of state institutions and proactive individuals like Hon. Agyemang, calling it a powerful model for delivering impactful and sustainable support to Ghana’s special needs students.
