Togo’s Silent Struggle: Why the World Must Act on Worsening Abuses

Authoritarian Rule, Suppressed Freedoms, and the Urgent Need for Global Response
Togo, a small West African nation often overshadowed in global headlines, is facing a deepening human rights crisis. For decades, the country has been ruled by the Gnassingbé family, whose longstanding grip on power has suppressed democratic institutions, silenced dissent, and perpetuated systemic violence against citizens.
Despite promises of reform, President Faure Gnassingbé, who succeeded his father Gnassingbé Eyadéma in 2005, continues to preside over a regime widely accused of human rights violations. These include arbitrary arrests, suppression of peaceful protests, intimidation of political opponents, and tight control over media and civil society.
Repression and the Rule of Fear
Civic groups and opposition parties have increasingly raised alarms about the deteriorating state of freedoms in the country. Reports from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch point to torture in detention facilities, unlawful surveillance, and the use of excessive force by security agencies during peaceful demonstrations.
In April 2025, several opposition leaders were detained without trial after organizing protests against constitutional changes that could further extend Faure Gnassingbé’s stay in power. The clampdown prompted renewed calls for international oversight and intervention.
A Call for International Accountability
The crisis in Togo underscores a critical need for international action. Regional bodies like ECOWAS and the African Union have been criticized for their silence and failure to enforce democratic norms within member states. Meanwhile, global powers have been urged to go beyond diplomatic statements and impose targeted sanctions on individuals responsible for abuses.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has also been petitioned by civil society groups to launch a formal inquiry into alleged state-sponsored human rights violations in Togo.
The Path Forward
As the people of Togo continue to demand political change, the international community must act decisively. Democracy cannot thrive in silence. It is time for robust diplomatic pressure, strategic engagement, and unwavering support for those risking their lives for freedom in Togo.
