The University of Ghana has announced the suspension of all social gatherings on campus, following a reported resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

The directive, issued by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Rosina Kyeremanten, is aimed at protecting the health and well-being of the university community.

    Safety before socialising

In a statement released to students and faculty, Prof. Kyeremanten acknowledged the inconvenience the measure may cause but stressed that it was a necessary precaution.

“This is a difficult decision, but it is important to prioritise the safety of our students and staff,” she said.

The ban affects events such as hall weeks, concerts, parties, large student gatherings, and all other non-academic social functions.

    Response to rising cases

The decision comes in response to a recent uptick in COVID-19 infections within the university and surrounding areas. Health officials have urged institutions to act swiftly to curb further spread.

The university’s health services have also stepped up surveillance, testing, and awareness campaigns to manage the situation proactively.

    Students urged to comply

All student groups, departments, and organisations have been directed to comply fully with the suspension. Failure to do so, the Dean warned, could result in disciplinary action.

She further encouraged students to observe COVID-19 safety protocols, including hand hygiene, mask-wearing, and social distancing.

The university administration will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
