Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports, Ernest Henry Norgbey, says government could eventually consider dissolving the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and restructuring the administration of football in the country.
Speaking exclusively to Akoma 87.9 FM after Ghana’s 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium, Mr Norgbey cited developments in Nigeria as an example of what could potentially happen.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the government steps in and says, ‘We are dissolving the GFA and starting afresh,’ because we have seen something similar happen in Nigeria. We need to invest more in our sporting activities.”
However, Mr Norgbey stressed that he was not advocating for the immediate dissolution of the GFA.
He said the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports would first need to establish what is happening within the Black Stars camp before taking any position on such a major intervention.
“If we are banned for two years, those two years could be used to rebuild and restructure the system, but it is not a call I will make at this moment until I get the understanding of what exactly is happening in camp.”
His comments follow Ghana’s 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in Accra, which has renewed discussions about the performance of the Black Stars and the wider administration of Ghana football.
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports is expected to engage the GFA and the Minister responsible for Sports as it seeks explanations on the national team’s recent performances and broader concerns surrounding the management of Ghana football.
