Speaking to the media, SSNIT Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations and Benefits, Adams Sulley, explained that the annual exercise is an important mechanism for confirming the continued eligibility of pension beneficiaries.
“The annual pensioner certificate renewal is an important part of our efforts to ensure that only eligible beneficiaries remain on the pension payroll,” Mr. Sulley said.
According to him, the certification exercise helps the Trust identify and prevent payments to ineligible beneficiaries while improving the efficiency and accountability of pension administration.
Pension payroll verification is particularly important for public institutions responsible for managing large beneficiary databases. Mr. Sulley said SSNIT is increasingly using technology to make the certification process more efficient and convenient for pensioners.
“We are using technology to make the verification process more efficient and convenient for pensioners, while also protecting the sustainability of the pension fund,” he added.
The digital approach is expected to reduce the need for some pensioners to travel long distances to SSNIT offices, particularly those who are elderly, physically challenged or living in areas far from service centres.
However, pensioners are encouraged to ensure that they follow the official renewal procedures and provide accurate information when completing the certification process. SSNIT’s Virtual Branch Expands Access

Meanwhile, the Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Pensioners Association in the Western Region, Anthony Essien, has disclosed that SSNIT has enrolled pensioners onto a medical support programme aimed at assisting with healthcare expenses.
Mr. Essien said the initiative was particularly important because some medicines prescribed for pensioners are not covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
“There are some medicines that doctors prescribe for pensioners which are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme. This support therefore comes as a relief to many of our members,” he said.
He explained that the programme could help reduce the financial pressure on retired workers, many of whom require regular medication, medical reviews and other healthcare services.
The cost of healthcare remains a major concern for many pensioners, especially those managing chronic conditions or relying primarily on fixed monthly incomes. Support programmes that help beneficiaries meet medical expenses can therefore contribute to their welfare and financial stability.
The Ghana National Pensioners Association has welcomed the initiative and called for sustained efforts to improve the living conditions of retired workers.
