The MP for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, known popularly as A-Plus, alleged police officers caused two deaths and 19 injuries while clashing with Gomoa Oguaakrom and New Winneba dwellers in the Central Region. Corrections Policy
Speaking during an interview on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the legislator addressed escalating violence, reportedly caused by an ongoing dispute over land ownership between the two towns.
According to A-Plus, police came with live bullets and started shooting occupants:”The police got there and shot 19 people while killing two; why are these people shooting people to kill them without justification.
The two shot are alleged to be Gomoa residents while the remaining 19 are said to be New Winneba residents. The police were called by an unknown official and started shooting. I allege police personnel are responsible.
One victim was shot far off as he was coming closer while a motorcyclist fired point blank at him in public”.A-Plus could not however be factually proven while the number of casualties remained uncertain and subject to investigation by security officials as per current standard operating procedures in most parts of the country.
Residents alleged some Gomoa Oguaakrom dweller entered New Winneba and began shutting down people’s shops with armed citizens attacking them.
New Winneba dwellers responded, and the shooting begun. Land dispute between both towns had raged on for years.A-Plus further challenged a police statement which had alleged that residents from Gomoa had also attacked with guns.”
Police claimed, Gomoa people came with guns to attack anybody. Show me the evidence. Were they not even present when those that went to attack police station failed to do so”,
A-Plus demanded. He however condemned the violence while asking police not to turn it into an “issue of two factions”. According to him, police were using excessive force when dealing with issues related to indiscipline, citing circumstances where they could do nothing in a case where citizens attacked a suspect at the police headquarters while being observed but acted in extremes when dealing with alleged wrongdoers between the towns.”
If people attack police officers and murder a suspect inside a police cell yet are still not arrested, how are you justified to come to my constituent to shoot them to death, injuring 19 at that.
When people allegedly attacked their bosses inside police Headquarters at Madina, and in the process clubbed them till one became physically challenged without any police intervention to stop it, or any arrest, where do these men (police) get their powers. Editorial Ethics & Independence
A-Plus questioned and dared police to produce names or visual evidence of people suspected and allegedly going to “attack anybody”, with weapons during that conflict. He added”

I can assure you now, at 16 hours on today, I have given specific orders to the MP of Gomoa Central constituency which I represent.
And that order stands from the Executive Office of the Presidency itself, Go there, record all the events of what happened as it unfolded bring out the number of police officers or any other paramilitary forces whose shooting went ahead, Do that with proof and when you have clear proof of policemen that shot somebody that was supposed to be handled by the court under legal framework to face justice not gun fire.
“However, the account given by police differs. Reports of latest attack say while 3 people have been killed, there is evidence of 15 to 17 being injured who are currently receiving treatment at Winneba Trauma Hospital.
The MP asked for public order as the dispute between Gomoa and New Winneba remains in custody of land management officials, citing a case where individuals who supposedly had the weapons have also been allegedly reported to have engaged other illegal acts but only received peaceful instruction rather than prosecution to go “face the consequences” under laws.

We were never going to ask people to keep the peace, but it is also our duty to address how indisciplined persons such as members of Gomoa or New Winneba attacked some people through their misconduct. Editorial Standards
A-Plus stated and added how he had instructed relevant parties including the police to go and witness all the happenings.Additional officers, police checkpoints have been set up as a consequence of the unrest and a hunt for those allegedly responsible and arrested is under-way.
A-Plus continued to maintain the dispute had been raging on since 1987 with a section of New Winneba residents illegally encroaching lands belonging to the natives of Gomoa thus raising social and tribal tensions in areas such as Gomoa Oguaakrom where villagers lost lands through illegal property annexation.
“They will always go and take peoples land when you are there. My father is also a landlord from Gomoa. These same New Winneba people took my father’s land” he claimed. But stressed he detests illegal acts that involved the use of firearms and has vowed that all unlawful property seizures should cease in and around Gomoa through appropriate means or court.
“I do not condone the use of weapons and guns by anything, no weapon was pointed at my constituent from Gomoa to New Winneba.
All Gomoa dwellers are unarmed” he stated while calling for due justice according to the laws and urged both parties involved to work out an appropriate lasting solution for the protracted land litigation, but with absolute security personnel at the border post for safety for every party involved especially my constituents and their land.
The incident continues to create fear in the affected regions and it is crucial for law officials to respond quickly and equitably as alleged by the MP and eyewitnesses, for the greater good of all inhabitants involved.
