The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has expressed frustration over the slow pace of work on the 32.2-kilometre Techiman-Nkonsia-Wenchi road project and has summoned the contractor, Volta Impex, for an urgent meeting.
The Minister is expected to meet the contractor on Monday, September 7, 2026, to demand an explanation for the limited progress recorded on the project.
The road project was awarded in 2024 under the previous administration and subsequently rolled over to the current government, which has pledged to ensure its completion.
However, Volta Impex only moved onto the site in 2026, with just about six per cent of the project completed so far.
Following a visit to the project site on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Mr Agbodza threatened to terminate the contract if the contractor fails to provide satisfactory reasons for the delays.
According to the Minister, Volta Impex has received GH¢66 million in mobilisation funds but has completed only approximately six per cent of the project.
The Chief Executive of the Ghana Highways Authority, Mallam Issah, however, appealed to the Minister to engage the contractor before taking any decision to terminate the contract.
He explained that the meeting would provide an opportunity to hear the contractor’s side and determine whether there were genuine challenges contributing to the slow progress.
“Looking at the situation as my Boss directed, I will want to engage the contractor on Monday so that by that time I will look into the problem, why we are still in this situation.
“And if I don’t get a reasonable answer, I will back the Minister’s assessment,” Mallam Issah said.
Mr Agbodza stressed that the government had committed to completing the road within a specified timeframe and could not continue to accept delays.
“We have promised to deliver this road within a certain timeframe. We have taken the step to award this job, though it was awarded before we came. As you know, no work was done for one year,” he said.
The Minister said his current position was to terminate the contract, although the Ghana Highways Authority CEO indicated that the contractor would first be given an opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding the poor progress.
“We are of the view that we have come to the end of the road. Monday would not be business as usual and I said my inclination this morning is to terminate the contract,” Mr Agbodza stated.
He added that if the contractor was overwhelmed with other projects and therefore unable to deliver the Techiman-Nkonsia-Wenchi road effectively, government should consider transferring the project to another contractor with the capacity to complete it.
“If in your view, you feel that the contractor is overloaded, let us be blunt about it and reassign the contract to someone else who can work,” he said.
