Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has declared his readiness to submit himself to investigations by the Ghana Police Service, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) or any other competent investigative body over allegations of extortion levelled against him.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had no objection to being investigated if the individuals who accused him of extortion formally reported the matter to the appropriate authorities. He made the remarks on Monday, August 24, 2026, when Parliament was recalled to consider urgent matters of state. Addressing the House in his opening remarks, the Minority Leader said he was confident that those who had made the allegations would have the courage to pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels.
“I expect that if they muster the courage and report that I have extorted from them and I am invited, I shall submit myself to every investigation so that eventually my name is cleared,” he said.
His comments come amid an escalating dispute involving him and the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi. The allegations have generated public discussion, with Mr Afenyo-Markin insisting that he has nothing to hide and is prepared to allow the relevant state institutions to establish the facts.
According to the Minority Leader, rather than attempting to avoid scrutiny, he had chosen what he described as the “high moral grounds” by submitting himself to the processes of the law. He said the appropriate institutions should be allowed to investigate the allegations and determine whether there was any basis for the claims made against him.
Mr Afenyo-Markin further disclosed that he had taken legal action in response to the allegations. He said he had caused a writ to be filed at the Accra High Court against Mr Sammy Gyamfi and the Multimedia Group Limited. He also indicated that a separate case had been filed at the Achimota Circuit Court against an individual identified as Eric Agyei and Peace FM.
The Minority Leader expressed confidence that the courts would eventually determine the issues surrounding the allegations and clear his name. “I have every confidence that in the fullness of time, the court will make the appropriate determination on these matters,” he told Parliament. His decision to resort to the courts comes as the controversy surrounding the allegations continues to attract public attention.
Mr Afenyo-Markin’s position suggests that he is seeking to address the matter through both the judicial and investigative processes rather than allowing the allegations to remain unresolved in the public domain. The Minority Leader’s comments also underscore the growing political and legal tensions surrounding claims made against public officials and prominent political figures.
By openly declaring his willingness to face an investigation, Mr Afenyo-Markin said he expected those making the accusations to formally present their claims to the relevant authorities. He maintained that such a process would provide an opportunity for the allegations to be properly examined and for the truth to be established.
The controversy involving Mr Afenyo-Markin and the GoldBod Chief Executive has emerged at a time when the Ghana Gold Board has become a significant focus of public discussion over the management and regulation of Ghana’s gold trade. GoldBod was established as part of efforts to reform the country’s gold trading system and strengthen the state’s participation in the sector.
Mr Afenyo-Markin’s comments in Parliament therefore add another dimension to the wider public debate surrounding the institution and its leadership. For the Minority Leader, however, the immediate priority is to ensure that the allegations against him are subjected to due process.
He maintained that if a formal complaint is made and an invitation is extended to him by the police, the OSP or another authorised investigative institution, he would cooperate fully with the investigation. His position is that a proper investigation and subsequent judicial determination would provide the most appropriate means of resolving the matter and protecting his reputation.
The development is expected to keep the controversy in the public spotlight as the legal processes initiated by the Minority Leader proceed. For now, Mr Afenyo-Markin has made clear that he is prepared to face any lawful investigation into the allegations, while leaving the ultimate determination of the matter to the appropriate investigative institutions and the courts.
