Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has taken legal action against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, an NDC official and two Accra-based media organisations over allegations that he engaged in extortion.
Mr Afenyo-Markin announced the decision in Parliament on Monday, August 24, 2026, saying he had chosen to rely on the legal process to clear his name following the allegations.
He disclosed that writs had been filed in two separate cases involving Mr Gyamfi, Multimedia Group Limited, Eric Adjei and Peace FM.
“Mr Speaker, in the face of the allegations of extortion levelled against me, I have chosen to take the high moral ground by submitting myself to the processes of the law,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence that the courts would determine the matter and establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
He also challenged those who accused him of extortion to report the matter to the appropriate law enforcement authorities for investigation.
“I also await with bated breath that the man or the men who made the allegation will have the courage to report the matter to the police or the OSP or any investigating agency in this country,” he said.
The Effutu MP added that he was prepared to cooperate fully with any investigation into the allegations against him.
He stressed that if an investigation is launched, he would submit himself to the process to ensure that his name is cleared.
Mr Afenyo-Markin further warned that political disagreements should not cross certain boundaries, particularly where serious allegations are made against individuals.
“There is a limit to political discourse. There are lines that must not be crossed and these red lines, once crossed, they must be dealt with,” he cautioned.
The legal action follows an escalating disagreement between the Minority Leader and Mr Gyamfi over the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Mr Afenyo-Markin has questioned reported losses associated with the programme and raised concerns about GoldBod’s role in the transactions, calling for greater transparency and accountability.
The disagreement intensified after Mr Gyamfi allegedly described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist”, a description Mr Afenyo-Markin considers defamatory.
The Minority Leader had earlier indicated that he would pursue legal action over the allegation.
Mr Gyamfi, however, has since appeared less willing to commit to a lawsuit against Mr Afenyo-Markin, arguing that the accusations against him were intended to divert attention from the substantive issues surrounding the GoldBod debate.
He also referenced Jesus Christ’s response to allegations against him, saying he remained silent despite numerous accusations.
The latest development has now moved the Afenyo-Markin and Sammy Gyamfi dispute from a political and media exchange into the courts, where the parties are expected to present their respective positions.
