Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the temporary unavailability of its passport application website, citing technical challenges affecting the online platform. The Ministry said customers attempting to access the passport application portal, passport.mfa.gov.gh, may currently experience difficulties as efforts are underway to restore the service.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the Ministry acknowledged the disruption and assured members of the public that steps were being taken to address the problem.

The temporary outage affects applicants who rely on the Ministry’s online platform to initiate or complete passport-related applications. The development could potentially cause delays for individuals who had planned to submit applications, provide information or access services through the website during the period of the disruption.

According to the Ministry, its technical team is working closely with the National Signals Bureau (NSB ) to resolve the challenges and restore the platform as quickly as possible.

The collaboration with the NSB forms part of efforts to identify the cause of the technical problem and ensure that the online passport application system returns to normal operations. The Ministry did not provide details about the specific nature of the technical difficulties affecting the website. However, it indicated that work was ongoing to address the situation.

The Ministry also apologised to customers and other members of the public who may have been affected by the temporary unavailability of the platform. It acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the disruption, particularly for individuals who may have urgent passport-related needs or scheduled activities that depend on access to the online application system.

The passport application website has become an important part of Ghana’s efforts to provide more convenient public services by allowing citizens to access passport-related services online.

Instead of relying entirely on physical processes, applicants can use the digital platform to begin their applications and access relevant information about passport services. Any prolonged interruption to the platform could therefore affect people who depend on the system to manage their applications.

Issued statement

The latest disruption comes at a time when digital platforms are increasingly being used by government institutions to improve access to public services and reduce the need for citizens to visit government offices physically. For passport applicants, the availability of a functional online platform is particularly important because the application process requires applicants to provide personal information and complete various stages before their applications can be processed.

The Ministry’s announcement is therefore expected to alert prospective applicants and existing customers to avoid assuming that difficulties accessing the platform are necessarily related to their individual internet connections or devices. Those attempting to access passport.mfa.gov.gh may continue to experience problems until the technical team completes the restoration process.

The Ministry, however, has not indicated how long the repairs are expected to take. It has instead assured the public that an update will be issued once the website has been restored and is fully operational. The absence of a specific restoration timeline means applicants may have to wait for further communication from the Ministry before they can determine when normal online passport application services will resume.

The Ministry’s decision to issue a public notice is also intended to keep customers informed and prevent uncertainty over the status of the website. It is expected that once the technical challenges have been resolved, the Ministry will notify the public through its official communication channels and confirm that the passport application portal is available for use.

In the meantime, applicants who encounter difficulties accessing the platform are being urged to take note of the Ministry’s announcement and await further updates rather than assuming that the problem is permanent. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to resolving the disruption as quickly as possible and restoring the online service for customers.

The temporary outage highlights the importance of maintaining the reliability of digital government platforms, particularly services that are used by large numbers of citizens and residents. As government services increasingly move online, interruptions to such platforms can have direct consequences for members of the public, including delays in submitting applications and accessing essential services.

For now, the Foreign Affairs Ministry says efforts are continuing, with its technical team working together with the National Signals Bureau to restore the passport website. The Ministry has assured affected customers that it will provide an update once the system has been successfully restored and is fully operational.

Until that announcement is made, individuals seeking to use the passport application portal may continue to experience temporary difficulties accessing the service. The Ministry has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and has appealed for understanding from the public as the technical teams work to resolve the problem
