President Mahama to Walk the Runway at Ghana Fashion Week 2025

President turns fashion model to champion made-in-Ghana fashion
President John Dramani Mahama is set to grace the runway at Ghana Fashion Week 2025, turning heads not for politics, but for his bold support of the nation’s fashion industry.
The announcement came on May 1 during the launch of the Black Star Experience at the iconic Freedom and Justice Monument in Accra. The president, who has consistently promoted made-in-Ghana attire, revealed his decision to participate as a model in the event scheduled for July.
“If you notice, I wear clothes made in Ghana. I have political suits all sewn by Ghanaian designers… On that day, I’m going to go into my wardrobe, change three times, and walk on the catwalk. Each time, I’ll tell you which designer made that outfit,” Mahama said.
Celebrating local talent through fashion

Mahama’s catwalk debut is more than just a novelty. It underscores his ongoing commitment to promoting Ghanaian culture and empowering local industries. His planned participation is part of the Black Star Experience, a flagship creative arts initiative by the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The program aims to redefine Ghanaian identity, attract tourism and investment, and create employment in the creative space.
Ghana Fashion Week is set to be a highlight of this initiative, showcasing both traditional and contemporary designs from some of the country’s top fashion talents.
A fashionable statement of leadership
Social media has since lit up with excitement over Mahama’s announcement, with many hailing it as a refreshing fusion of leadership and culture. His choice to walk the runway is expected to draw both local and international attention to Ghana’s vibrant fashion industry.
“It’s inspiring to see a national leader proudly championing our creatives on such a big stage,” one Accra-based designer told local reporters.
The July fashion show is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year — and with Mahama’s wardrobe ready, all eyes will be on the catwalk.
