The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has leveled sharp accusations against the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming they are evading a re-run of the disputed Ablekuma North Parliamentary results from the 2024 General Elections.
Speaking on 3FM Sunrise with Johnnie Hughes, Dr. Tanko declared that the NDC will resist any attempt by the NPP and the Electoral Commission (EC) to manipulate the outcome.
“We (NDC) want a re-run for the 62 polling stations, but the NPP is running away. They’re insisting on declaring the results with their fake scanned copies and we won’t accept it,” Tanko fumed.
The standoff has left the Ablekuma North Constituency without a Member of Parliament months after the polls, as chaotic scenes have marred multiple attempts by the EC to collate and declare final results.
EC Under Fire Over Alleged Bias
Dr. Tanko, who also serves as the CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), further accused the EC of covert plans to rig the election in favour of the NPP.
“This EC is the problem of the country’s democracy. Why should collating results and figures be a challenge? Then, there’s an ulterior motive to rig,” he alleged.
Despite the EC’s appeal for police protection to complete the collation process, Tanko insists that the NDC candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, is the legitimate winner.
“As of December 8, Ewurabena was declared the winner for the constituency. By law, it is the returning officer who declares the elections and that has been done. So, I don’t see why the NPP is rejecting the results.”
Legal Showdown Looms
The NDC’s firm position sets the stage for a possible legal battle, as Tanko reminded the NPP that any challenge to the declared results must be pursued in court.
“If the officer announces someone as the winner and you are not satisfied, you file a case in court to seek redress,” he added.
The Ablekuma North Constituency remains one of the few flashpoints from the 2024 elections where results are yet to be officially resolved, raising concerns about electoral transparency and public trust in democratic institutions.
