Ghana’s Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has welcomed the arrival of Uganda Airlines in the country, describing the new air service as an important development for regional connectivity, trade and tourism between West and East Africa.

The Ugandan national carrier commenced scheduled operations at Accra International Airport on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, introducing a new connection between Entebbe, Uganda, and Accra through Lagos, Nigeria. Corrections Policy

The service will initially operate four times a week, giving passengers another option for travelling between the two African regions while creating opportunities for closer commercial and cultural ties.

Speaking at the inaugural flight ceremony, Mr Nikpe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing Ghana’s aviation infrastructure and strengthening the country’s position as a destination for international travel.

His remarks come as Ghana works to attract more airlines, improve regional air connections and advance plans to establish a new national carrier.

According to a reports, the minister described Uganda Airlines’ entry into the Ghanaian market as a boost for the aviation sector. A source also reported on the launch in its coverage of the government’s national airline plans and the need to strengthen air transport links across Africa.

New Route Connects Accra, Lagos and Entebbe

The introduction of the service adds another option for travellers moving between Ghana and Uganda. The flights operate through Lagos, allowing the airline to connect passengers across three important West and East African markets.

The service is being operated with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft wet-leased from Ethiopian Airlines. Under a wet-lease arrangement, the aircraft is provided with its crew and associated operational support, enabling an airline to introduce or expand services without immediately adding an aircraft to its own fleet.

For passengers, the new route could make travel between Accra and Entebbe more convenient by providing an additional scheduled connection.

It may also improve access to onward destinations served through Uganda Airlines’ network, subject to available connections and ticketing arrangements.

The launch comes amid longstanding concerns about limited air connectivity between African countries.

Expanding regional routes could help address some of these challenges and make business travel, tourism and commercial exchanges more accessible.

Ghana Seeks to Strengthen Its Aviation Position

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Nikpe said the government would continue investing in aviation infrastructure to improve Ghana’s competitiveness and attract international operators.

Modern airports, efficient passenger services and reliable supporting infrastructure are important to an airline’s decision to serve a destination.

However, infrastructure investment must also be supported by passenger demand, operational efficiency and effective cooperation among aviation authorities.

The Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, welcomed Uganda Airlines’ arrival, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen relations between Ghana and Uganda.

She said the service was expected to expand passenger options, support tourism and cultural exchange, facilitate trade and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.

The development also reinforces Accra’s potential role as a gateway for travellers and businesses seeking connections across West Africa.

Uganda Airlines Eyes Further Expansion

Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake said the new service was intended to improve connectivity between East and West Africa.

The airline’s initial four weekly flights represent the beginning of its expansion into the Ghanaian market, with management expressing interest in increasing the frequency as demand develops.

The company has indicated that it ultimately hopes to operate daily services between Accra and Entebbe.

Such an expansion would depend on passenger numbers, operational capacity and the commercial performance of the route.

Ghana has also granted the airline fifth-freedom traffic rights for the Lagos–Accra sector, according to Uganda Broadcasting Corporation’s October 28 report. Editorial Standards

These rights allow an airline, subject to regulatory approvals, to carry passengers or cargo between two foreign countries as part of a service connected to its home country.

The arrangement could provide additional commercial opportunities for Uganda Airlines by allowing it to serve passengers travelling between Nigeria and Ghana, rather than relying exclusively on customers connecting to or from Entebbe.

Potential Benefits for Trade and Tourism

Improved air links can support economic cooperation by making it easier for businesspeople to attend meetings, establish partnerships and explore investment opportunities across borders.

For Ghanaian exporters and Ugandan businesses, better connections could facilitate commercial travel and strengthen relationships between markets.

Tourism operators may also benefit from greater access for visitors interested in the countries’ cultural attractions, hospitality industries and natural landscapes.

However, the scale of these benefits will depend on whether the service attracts sufficient demand and maintains reliable operations.

Affordable fares, convenient schedules and effective connections will be important if the route is to serve a broad range of travellers.

The launch also comes as the Ghanaian government advances plans to restore a national airline. Newscard

According to reports the task force overseeing the proposed carrier was nearing completion of its work, with the government hoping to increase Ghana’s direct participation in the aviation industry.

Mr Nikpe has argued that Ghana should complement investment in airports with a stronger role in transporting passengers and goods.

A Step Towards Greater African Connectivity

Uganda Airlines’ arrival adds another link to the growing network of African air services and creates an opportunity to strengthen relations between Ghana and Uganda.

The long-term success of the route will depend on passenger demand, commercial sustainability, safety and consistent service delivery.

For Ghana, attracting additional operators can help widen travel choices while supporting the country’s ambition to become a more competitive aviation destination.

The inaugural flight is therefore more than a new route announcement.

It represents a practical opportunity to improve connections between African markets, support regional economic activity and strengthen cooperation in a sector essential to the continent’s wider integration.
