Members of the Engineering Club of Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Senior High School in Trabuom in the Ashanti Region have built a multipurpose drone capable of supporting firefighting, intelligence gathering, delivery services and marine patrols.
According to the students, the drone can also be used for surveillance, border patrol and other security-related operations.
The project was led by the club’s lead engineer and tutor, Sir Ferdinand Sam, who said the drone was designed and built entirely by the students as part of their Aerospace practicals.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Sir Sam disclosed that the drone had successfully completed its first test flight on the Suhum By-pass Road.
He said the test provided the students with valuable lessons and insights, which they are now using to improve the drone and enhance its effectiveness for practical applications.
“The drone has a wingspan of 4 metres, a length of 3.5 metres and a height of 1.4 metres, with a weight of 19.5 kilograms. Leading the students, we built the drone from scratch, and the idea is to develop solutions to our everyday problems in the country,” he said.
Sir Sam said the project highlights the potential of Ghanaian students when they are given the necessary practical exposure, resources and support to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
He added that the Engineering Club would continue to refine the innovation as the students explore more ways to apply drone technology to real-world challenges.
