Carlos Queiroz is reportedly close to securing a new contract as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team following strong backing from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The Portuguese tactician was appointed to lead the Black Stars after Otto Addo’s departure and successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
However, Ghana’s World Cup journey came to an end at the Round of 32 stage after the Black Stars suffered defeat to Colombia.
Queiroz’s future became uncertain after his initial four-month contract expired without a renewal, with outstanding payments to the coach and members of his technical team reportedly contributing to the delay.
The financial obligations have since reportedly been settled by the GFA with assistance from the Ministry of Sports, clearing the way for talks over a fresh agreement to be concluded.
The GFA Executive Council has reportedly unanimously endorsed the Portuguese coach’s continued stay, with approval from the Ministry of Sports now said to be the final major hurdle before the deal is completed.
The Ministry of Sports is responsible for funding the coach’s salary, and an official announcement is expected once the necessary approval is secured.
Should the contract be finalised, Queiroz will take charge of Ghana’s campaign in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as the Black Stars seek to return to the continental tournament and end the country’s long-standing wait for an AFCON title.
Ghana is scheduled to begin its qualifying campaign with an away fixture against Ivory Coast on September 24, 2026, at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké. The Black Stars will then host Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
A new deal for Queiroz would provide the Black Stars with continuity and stability as the team prepares for the AFCON qualifiers and looks ahead to its next major international assignments.
