Members of Parliament have begun debating the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, with lawmakers from both the Majority and Minority sides outlining their positions on the government’s economic performance and fiscal policies.
The debate follows the presentation of the Mid-Year Budget Review by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson last week and is expected to shape Parliament’s assessment of the country’s economic direction for the remainder of the year.
Opening the debate, legislators examined key measures outlined in the budget review, including revenue mobilisation, public expenditure, infrastructure development and the government’s broader economic recovery agenda. The discussions also focused on progress made in implementing the 2026 Budget Statement and the challenges that remain.
Members of the Majority defended the government’s fiscal policies, arguing that recent economic indicators point to improving stability and renewed confidence in the economy. They maintained that ongoing reforms are beginning to produce positive results and should be sustained.
The Minority, however, questioned aspects of the budget review, raising concerns over the implementation of projects and the pace of delivery on some government commitments. Members called for greater accountability and urged the government to ensure that promised programmes translate into tangible benefits for citizens.
Economic analysts say the parliamentary debate offers an important opportunity for lawmakers to scrutinise the government’s fiscal performance and recommend measures that will strengthen economic management. They note that the outcome of the discussions could influence policy implementation during the second half of the year.
Debate on the Mid-Year Budget Review is expected to continue over the coming days before Parliament concludes its consideration of the Finance Minister’s statement.
