A major system failure on Ghana’s electricity grid has triggered widespread water shortages across the country, forcing the shutdown of major treatment facilities and pumping stations.
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) issued a public statement on Wednesday, July 29, apologizing to consumers for the disruption and confirming that its capacity to treat and pump potable water has been severely restricted.
The crisis began at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday when a severe technical disturbance occurred on the National Interconnected Transmission System. According to the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the system failure led to the simultaneous tripping of major power generation plants nationwide, plunging vast regions of the country into darkness.
Because water infrastructure relies heavily on continuous power, the sudden loss of electricity paralyzed pumping operations.”As a result of the power supply interruption, most of GWL’s water production systems, which rely on electricity supplied through the national grid are not operational”, GWL stated.
Utility officials noted that the loss of service was caused by factors outside their direct control, but assured the public that operations would resume quickly once electricity is restored.
GRIDCo responded that Engineers and system operators have activated emergency recovery protocols to stabilize the grid and restore electricity safely. A formal technical investigation is underway to identify what triggered the initial 3:11 a.m. generator trip.
GWL Technical teams at treatment stations remain on high alert, prepared to restart water processing and distribution facilities as soon as steady power returns. GWL management appealed for patience and understanding while utility teams address the crisis, promising further updates as grid stability is re-established.
