The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a plan to increase the monthly allowance for street sweepers, doubling it from GH₵400 to GH₵800 per month.
The initiative is part of AMA’s broader effort to improve working conditions and welfare for frontline sanitation workers who play a critical role in keeping Accra clean and enhancing public health.
Officials say the increase reflects the assembly’s recognition of the challenges faced by street sweepers, including the physical demands of the job, rising living costs, and the need to make sanitation work more dignified and sustainable as part of urban development goals.

The proposed adjustment will take effect in the coming budget cycle and is expected to benefit hundreds of members of the city’s sanitation workforce. AMA said it will work with relevant departments to ensure timely implementation and monitor the impact of the new allowance on worker retention and service quality.
The assembly’s move follows ongoing calls from labour groups and civil society for better pay and conditions for municipal workers, particularly those engaged in waste management and environmental services.
