Baba Jamal Mohamed has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries held in the Ayawaso East constituency, following a closely contested internal election that drew significant attention within the party.

Provisional results from the constituency indicate that Baba Jamal polled 431 votes, securing a narrow victory over his closest contender, Hajia Amina Adam, who garnered 399 votes. The margin of 32 votes underscored the highly competitive nature of the race.

The primary featured five candidates in total. Mohammed Ramme placed third with 88 votes, while Dr Yakubu Azindow followed with 45 votes. Najib Mohammed Sani trailed the field, securing one vote.

In all, 964 valid votes were cast in the primary, reflecting strong participation by accredited delegates in one of the NDC’s most politically active constituencies in Accra.

The election, however, was not without controversy. Earlier in the day, the NDC national leadership issued a statement condemning alleged incidents of inducement and vote-buying during the voting process. The party described the reported acts as contrary to its values and announced the immediate launch of investigations, warning that future infractions could attract severe sanctions, including the possible annulment of internal elections.

Despite these concerns, party officials proceeded to collate and declare the provisional results, pending any outcomes from the announced investigations.

Baba Jamal’s victory positions him as the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East ahead of the 2028 general elections, subject to the party’s internal validation processes. His win marks a significant political comeback and sets the stage for an intensified contest in a constituency regarded as a key electoral battleground.

Party supporters and observers are now turning attention to how the NDC will manage post-primary reconciliation in the constituency, following a tightly fought race and lingering concerns over conduct during the polls.
