Accra Mayor Issues Ultimatum to Pavement Traders: Vacate by May 20 or Be Removed

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Allotey, has given all pavement traders in the city until Tuesday, May 20, 2025, to vacate the streets or face forcible eviction. This directive is part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) renewed efforts to decongest the capital and restore order along pedestrian walkways.

Reason Behind the Eviction Directive

According to the Mayor, the AMA has observed a surge in unauthorized trading activities along major streets, creating obstructions for pedestrians and posing safety risks. He emphasized that while the assembly values the role of small businesses, law and order must be maintained in public spaces.

“We are giving a final notice to traders on pavements to move voluntarily. After the deadline, the city task force will take decisive action,” Mayor Allotey stated during a press briefing on Thursday.

The AMA is also in talks to allocate alternative trading spaces for affected vendors, particularly within designated market areas. Authorities have encouraged traders to comply with the directive to avoid confrontations.

This move is part of a broader campaign to beautify Accra and improve urban mobility under the “Clean Accra Project,” aimed at promoting public hygiene, environmental sanity, and safe pedestrian access.
