Assemblies Given 21-Day Ultimatum
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a strict directive to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) within the Greater Accra Region to remove billboards mounted on flyovers within 21 days. The directive, announced on April 7, 2025, is part of efforts to enhance road safety and reduce visual distractions for motorists.
Safety Risks Prompt Urgent Action
According to the NRSA, the presence of billboards on flyovers poses a significant danger to road users. These structures obstruct visibility, distract drivers, and can become hazards in extreme weather conditions. The Authority emphasized that the increasing number of such billboards contradicts the Road Traffic Regulations and compromises public safety.
Enforcement to Follow Non-Compliance
NRSA Director-General Ing. David Osafo Adonteng stated that failure to comply with the order within the stipulated time frame will result in enforcement action. This may include dismantling unauthorized billboards and imposing penalties on defaulting assemblies or advertisers.
Collaborative Efforts with Assemblies
The Authority revealed that it has already engaged the Assemblies on this issue and expects full cooperation to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of road users. Assemblies are also expected to review and monitor the activities of advertisers to prevent future unauthorized placements.
Call for Responsible Advertising

The NRSA is calling on advertising agencies and billboard owners to act responsibly and comply with established safety regulations. The Authority warned that future violations will not be tolerated and that stricter monitoring mechanisms will be put in place.
Public Encouraged to Report Violations
Citizens are encouraged to report billboards that pose safety risks or have been erected without proper authorization. The NRSA has provided hotlines and email platforms to facilitate public engagement and improve compliance.
