A father and his son have been arrested by the police in connection with the alleged killing of a 31-year-old man at Assin Akrofuom in the Assin South District of the Central Region, following accusations of cocoa theft. Editorial Standards
The deceased, identified as Samuel Kofi Amankwa, popularly known as Kofi Marshie, reportedly died after an alleged assault linked to claims that he had stolen agricultural produce belonging to the suspects.
The suspects, identified as Joseph Mensah and his son, Anthony Mensah, have been provisionally charged with murder and are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to reports, preliminary police investigations suggest that the confrontation occurred after one of the suspects allegedly caught Amankwa stealing half a bag of fresh cocoa beans.

However, the incident is also believed to have been connected to earlier allegations involving the theft of coconut seedlings belonging to the suspects.
These conflicting accounts are expected to form part of the ongoing police investigation.
The Central North Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Edmund Agyemang Badu, confirmed the arrests in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
He explained that the two suspects reported themselves to the police following the incident, after which officers were dispatched to the location to establish what had happened.
Upon arriving at the scene, the police reportedly found Amankwa lying on his back near an electricity pole.
Officers also retrieved a nylon rope suspected to have been used to restrain him during the alleged assault.
A preliminary examination of the deceased’s body reportedly revealed bruises on his hands, eyebrows and waist.
According to the regional crime officer, the injuries were consistent with those that could have resulted from an assault.
The discovery of the rope and the injuries found on the body have become important elements of the investigation as authorities work to establish the sequence of events that led to the man’s death.
However, members of the deceased’s family have presented a different account of how the incident unfolded.
Speaking to Citi News, the Asona Abusuapanin of Assin Akrofuom, Nana Kofi Ohemeng, alleged that the suspects forcibly entered Amankwa’s room while he was asleep before dragging him outside and assaulting him.
He explained that the deceased’s room was approximately 500 metres from the location where the alleged beating took place.

The family’s account suggests that the incident may have involved more than a confrontation over suspected cocoa theft, with earlier disagreements concerning coconut seedlings also being cited as a possible motive.
Amankwa’s sister, Ama Bimpomaa, also alleged that her brother was tied to an electricity pole with a rope and severely beaten until he collapsed and died. Editorial Ethics & Independence
She maintained that the attack was connected to previous accusations that her brother had stolen coconut seedlings belonging to the suspects.
The differing accounts from the police and the deceased’s relatives have raised questions about the events leading to the fatal incident.
Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, the nature of the alleged assault and the respective roles of the two suspects.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been conveyed to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital morgue in Assin Fosu, where it has been deposited pending an autopsy.
The post-mortem examination is expected to help determine the exact cause of death and provide additional medical evidence to support the ongoing investigation.
The two suspects are expected to appear before the Assin Fosu District Court as the police continue their investigations into the case.
Their provisional charges do not amount to a determination of guilt, which must be established through the judicial process.
The incident has also renewed concerns about the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands when dealing with suspected criminal activities, particularly in farming communities where disputes over crops and agricultural produce can sometimes result in confrontations. Corrections Policy
While theft allegations can create serious tensions between farmers and individuals suspected of stealing their produce, the appropriate response remains reporting such matters to the police and allowing the legal system to handle them.
Violence against suspected offenders can have devastating consequences, including the loss of innocent lives and serious criminal charges for those involved.
The police have therefore urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminal activities or disputes to the appropriate security authorities.
As investigations continue, residents of Assin Akrofuom and surrounding communities will be awaiting further details about the case, particularly the findings of the autopsy and the outcome of the court proceedings.
For now, the death of Samuel Kofi Amankwa remains under investigation, with authorities expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and ensure that the matter is addressed through the appropriate legal process.
