Zeepay Ghana Limited and its Managing Director, Andrew Takyi-Appiah, have sued MTN Ghana’s operator, Scancom PLC, and Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL), seeking damages over the alleged wrongful registration of a corporate mobile money wallet in the managing director’s name.

The suit, filed at the High Court in Accra on October 23, 2026, centres on a dispute over the registration and ownership details of a corporate MTN Mobile Money wallet used for Zeepay’s business operations. Editorial Ethics & Independence

The plaintiffs allege that the wallet was registered using the company’s know-your-customer (KYC) documents but bore the name of Takyi-Appiah instead of Zeepay Ghana Limited.

In a report a source claimed that plaintiffs are seeking GH¢15 million in damages for the managing director, in addition to general damages for Zeepay over the alleged breach of contract.

The claims have not been tested in court, and the defendants’ response to the allegations will be important as the case proceeds.

The legal action raises questions about corporate wallet registration, customer instructions and the importance of accurate account records in Ghana’s mobile money sector.

Dispute centres on corporate wallet registration

According to the statement of claim reported, Zeepay subscribed to an MTN Mobile Money corporate wallet, known as an OVA wallet, around 2022 or 2023 to support its business operations.

The company alleges that it later discovered the wallet had been registered in Takyi-Appiah’s name, despite the subscription and KYC documents being in the company’s name.

The plaintiffs argue that this arrangement created confusion over the identity of the corporate wallet’s owner. They say customers transacting with Zeepay through the wallet could see the managing director’s name rather than the company’s name.

The dispute is particularly significant because corporate financial accounts are expected to identify the business appropriately while distinguishing ownership from the individuals authorised to manage or operate an account.

Zeepay and its managing director contend that the wallet’s registration details should have reflected the company’s identity, consistent with the instructions they say were provided to the defendants.

However, the legal question of whether the registration breached contractual obligations or applicable requirements remains for the court to determine.

Zeepay says it requested correction in 2023

The plaintiffs say they formally contacted MTN Ghana and MMFL on November 21, 2023, asking that Takyi-Appiah’s name be removed from the corporate wallet and replaced with Zeepay Ghana Limited.

According to the court filing as reported, Zeepay says it supplied the necessary documentation to support the requested change.

The company further alleges that it sent reminders over the following years, including communications extending to August 2026, but the registration details had not been corrected by the time the suit was filed. Corrections Policy

The plaintiffs argue that the alleged failure to act on their instructions amounts to a breach of contract and has caused harm to both the company and its managing director.

Their complaint also concerns the consequences of the wallet’s registration details in separate legal proceedings involving Zeepay.

Takyi-Appiah claims that the use of his name on the wallet has contributed to his being personally drawn into litigation connected with the company’s transactions.

These assertions form part of the plaintiffs’ case and have not yet been established as findings by the court.

Managing director seeks GH¢15 million in damages

The lawsuit seeks several remedies from the defendants.

Zeepay is asking the court to award general damages for the alleged breach of contract and to order the removal of Takyi-Appiah’s name from the corporate wallet, in accordance with the company’s November 2023 request.

Takyi-Appiah is separately seeking GH¢10 million in general damages for alleged pain, distress and reputational harm, together with GH¢5 million in exemplary damages.

The combined GH¢15 million claim relates to the managing director’s demands, while Zeepay is also pursuing its own claim for damages.

The plaintiffs are also asking for legal costs, including legal fees, and any additional relief the court considers appropriate. Editorial Standards

They contend that the defendants’ handling of the registration issue was wrongful and that the continued use of the managing director’s name caused avoidable reputational consequences.

The court will have to consider the evidence, the relevant contractual obligations and the parties’ respective positions before deciding whether the claims are justified.

Implications for mobile money and corporate compliance

The case highlights the importance of accurate customer records in Ghana’s growing digital payments industry.

Mobile money services are widely used by individuals and businesses to receive payments, transfer funds and support commercial transactions.

For corporate users, the accuracy of account names and the distinction between account owners and authorised handlers can be important for accounting, customer confidence and legal accountability.

Financial service providers must maintain appropriate customer identification and verification procedures.

Businesses, meanwhile, need to ensure that their account details reflect their legal identity and that requests to correct errors are properly documented and followed up.

The dispute also demonstrates why clear communication between corporate customers and financial service providers matters.

Where account information remains contested, the consequences may extend beyond routine administration to affect business relationships and legal proceedings.

A source have reported on wider legal and regulatory issues involving Zeepay in recent months.

Those separate matters should not be treated as proof of the allegations in this new lawsuit, which concerns the registration of a corporate mobile money wallet.

Court proceedings to determine the dispute

The October 23 filing begins another legal process in which the plaintiffs are asking the court to determine whether MTN Ghana’s operator and MMFL breached their obligations and whether the claimed damages should be awarded.

The defendants will have the opportunity to respond through the legal process.

Until the court reaches a decision, the allegations should be treated as claims made by the plaintiffs rather than established facts.

The outcome could clarify the obligations of mobile money providers when registering corporate wallets and responding to requests to amend account information. Newscard

For Zeepay and Takyi-Appiah, the immediate objective is to obtain the requested correction and compensation for the alleged harm.

For the defendants, the case provides an opportunity to present their position on the registration and handling of the disputed wallet.

The High Court’s eventual findings will determine whether the plaintiffs are entitled to the relief they are seeking.
