American R&B singer Chris Brown has received an eight month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for attacking music producer Abe Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.
The 37 year old singer was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court alongside his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, 40. Both men pleaded guilty to affray in July.
Judge Tony Baumgartner ruled that Brown’s role in the incident was more serious than that of Akinlolu, who received a four month custodial sentence, also suspended for 12 months.

The court heard that Brown struck Diaw with a tequila bottle, including blows to the head, leaving the producer with injuries to his head and knee that required hospital treatment. CCTV footage of the incident was presented during the proceedings.
In explaining the sentences, the judge highlighted the dangerous nature of repeatedly using a bottle as a weapon. He also noted that the attack happened in a “crowded” and “confined” setting, with both defendants pursuing Diaw as he attempted to move away.
Although the violence was described as “intense”, the judge acknowledged that the incident lasted “no more” than 20 seconds and was not premeditated.

Akinlolu’s sentence was lower because he did not initiate the violence or use a bottle. His involvement included punching and kicking Diaw while he was on the ground. However, the judge considered his participation “significant” because he joined the assault and pursued the victim as he tried to leave.
Despite the custodial sentences, neither man will be sent to prison immediately, provided they comply with the law during the suspension period. The court also ordered each defendant to contribute £1,500 towards prosecution costs.
The judge explained that the sentences were the shortest custodial terms he considered appropriate for the seriousness of the offences.

“Be in no doubt, however, a suspended sentence order is a custodial sentence, the imposition of such an order is a punishment with or without requirements,” Judge Baumgartner told the defendants.
Under the Sentencing Act 2026, custodial sentences of 12 months or less are generally presumed to be suspended unless specific legal exceptions apply. The judge said the circumstances of the case did not justify departing from that requirement.
Following the hearing, Brown left the courthouse amid cheers from supporters gathered outside. Wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses and a face covering, the singer briefly stopped to sign an autograph before security personnel escorted him to a black vehicle.

Brown later posted a video on his Instagram story showing him inside the vehicle, looking out of the window before turning towards the camera and giving a thumbs-up.
The suspended sentences mean both men avoid immediate imprisonment. However, if either commits another offence during the 12 month suspension period, the court may require them to serve the original custodial term in addition to any sentence imposed for the new offence.
