Security personnel have arrested 16 suspects and recovered more than 200 rounds of ammunition, firearms and suspected narcotic substances during coordinated operations at the Gbane mining site in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

The arrests followed separate security operations conducted by the Upper East Regional Police Command and personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces as authorities intensified efforts to maintain peace and order in the mining community.

According to a report, the operations resulted in the recovery of 209 live AA cartridges, two pump-action guns, suspected Indian hemp and several other items, including body armour, security uniforms and communication equipment. Corrections Policy

The police operation took place on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, involving personnel from the National Police Intelligence Directorate, the Upper East Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, the Special Operations Team, popularly known as Black Cobra, and the Tongo District Police Command.

The military separately arrested six additional suspects, bringing the combined number of people apprehended to 16. All the suspects were reported to be in police custody assisting with investigations.

Police recover ammunition and suspected narcotics

During the police-led operation, officers arrested 10 suspects and retrieved several items that are expected to support ongoing investigations.

The items recovered included 104 live AA cartridges, 37 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, 12 mobile phones and seven security uniforms belonging to Nalamtaaba Mining Enterprise, a small-scale mining company operating in the area.

Officers also recovered seven body armours, two pepper sprays, four touch lights, a knife, a weapon bag and a set of walkie-talkies.

The discovery of ammunition and protective equipment at the mining site has raised security concerns, particularly given the tensions previously reported in the surrounding communities and among parties connected to mining operations.

However, the police have not publicly established whether the recovered items were linked to a particular criminal incident or whether all the suspects had direct connections to the weapons and other exhibits.

The substances suspected to be narcotics are also yet to be confirmed through any publicly reported laboratory analysis. The suspects remain under investigation, and their arrest does not establish guilt.

The recovered items will form part of the evidence available to investigators as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the operation.

Military operation leads to six additional arrests

In a separate operation, personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces’ 11 Mechanised Battalion arrested six more suspects and recovered two pump-action guns together with 105 live AA cartridges.

The six suspects and the recovered exhibits were subsequently handed over to the police at Bolgatanga for further investigations.

When combined with the 104 cartridges recovered during the police operation, the total number of live cartridges seized stood at 209.

The separate operations demonstrate the involvement of both police intelligence units and military personnel in responding to security concerns around the mining area. Newscard

The authorities have not disclosed the identities of the arrested individuals or provided detailed information about the specific offences they are suspected of committing.

Further investigations are expected to establish whether the weapons and ammunition were lawfully possessed, how they came to be at the site and whether any of the suspects were involved in activities that threatened public safety.

Mining tensions raise security concerns

The operation comes against the background of tensions involving the Gbane and Namolug communities, Nalamtaaba Mining Enterprise and Earl International Mining Limited.

Mining areas can face complicated security challenges involving competing interests, access to mineral resources, local livelihoods and disputes over land or operational activities.

When such tensions escalate, the risks can extend beyond companies and workers to affect surrounding communities.

The presence of ammunition and suspected narcotics at a mining site makes effective policing and reliable investigations particularly important.

Authorities must determine whether the recovered exhibits are connected to wider security concerns while ensuring that any suspects are treated in accordance with the law. Editorial Standards

Maintaining peace in the area will also require cooperation among security agencies, mining operators, traditional authorities and residents.

Where disagreements arise, transparent communication and lawful dispute-resolution processes can help prevent misunderstandings from escalating into confrontations.

Police intensify patrols to maintain peace

The Upper East Regional Police Command has indicated that patrols will continue in the affected communities to maintain peace and order.

Continued patrols can help security personnel monitor developments, respond to emerging threats and reassure residents and workers concerned about their safety.

The effectiveness of these measures will depend on sustained coordination among the police, military and local stakeholders. Authorities will also need to ensure that investigations are conducted thoroughly and that any criminal charges are supported by evidence.

For residents and people working in the mining sector, a stable security environment is essential to protecting lives, property and legitimate economic activity.

The latest operation also highlights the importance of intelligence-led policing in identifying potential security risks before they develop into more serious incidents.

Investigations continue as suspects remain in custody

All 16 suspects were reported to be in police custody assisting with investigations, with the police indicating that they would be put before the court.

The next stage will involve establishing the individual circumstances of each arrest, examining the recovered weapons and ammunition, and determining whether sufficient evidence exists to support criminal charges.

The outcome of the investigations will be important in clarifying the significance of the items seized and whether the operation has uncovered links to broader security problems in the mining community. Editorial Ethics & Independence

For now, the arrests represent a significant security operation at Gbane, but the legal responsibility of each suspect will depend on the evidence and the judicial process.

As patrols continue, the priority remains maintaining public safety, preventing further tensions and ensuring that any alleged wrongdoing is addressed through lawful procedures.
