The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reminded drivers operating commercial vehicles with yellow registration plates within the metropolis to obtain commercial driver’s licences from the Assembly.
The directive is part of efforts to regulate commercial transport operations and ensure that drivers comply with licensing requirements under the AMA’s by-laws.
The requirement is contained in the AMA (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) By-laws, 2017, which provides guidelines for the operation of commercial vehicles within the metropolis.
Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said the reminder had become necessary due to continued confusion among some motorists and enforcement officers over the difference between a commercial driver’s licence and a vehicle sticker.
According to him, the commercial driver’s licence is issued as a card and costs GH¢60 for new applicants, while annual renewal attracts a fee of GH¢23.
He explained that the licence should not be confused with the vehicle sticker, which is displayed on the windscreen of a commercial vehicle.
Mr. Ankrah further stated that drivers of commercially registered vehicles, identified by their yellow number plates, are required to obtain the AMA commercial driver’s licence in addition to holding the appropriate driving licence issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
The AMA said the requirement is intended to strengthen compliance and improve the regulation of commercial transport services across the metropolis.
