Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are preparing for a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, to protest the proposed involvement of private investors in the management of the power distribution company.
The demonstration, which is being organised by the Senior Staff Union (SSU) and Junior Staff Union (JSU), will be held across ECG’s operational regions and will culminate in the presentation of a petition to President John Dramani Mahama.
In a joint directive signed by SSU National Chairman Christopher Apawu and his JSU counterpart, Lucky Larry Agboka, divisional and branch executives have been directed to mobilise members for the protest.
The petition is expected to be presented to the respective regional ministers in the various operational areas for onward submission to the President.
The exercise will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m.
In Accra, workers are expected to gather at the forecourt of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), while those in Kumasi will assemble at the ECG Regional Office close to the Airport Roundabout.
Participants in other parts of the country will converge at their respective ECG regional offices, with details of the routes for the marches expected to be communicated later.
Following the march, the workers will return to their designated assembly points for a briefing before the demonstration officially ends.
The planned nationwide protest forms part of a series of industrial actions announced by the unions earlier this month as they intensify their opposition to the proposed private sector participation arrangement.
As part of the ongoing measures, ECG workers are expected to continue wearing red armbands until the unions announce the next phase of their action.
The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), which is coordinating the demonstration, will lead the nationwide exercise.
According to the unions, PUWU has notified the Inspector General of Police about the planned demonstration in accordance with Section 1(2) of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).
National and regional committees have been tasked with coordinating the exercise, while additional instructions and logistical arrangements will be communicated to workers through their respective union structures.
