The incident occurred on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after the police reportedly received intelligence that four armed men riding two motorbikes were heading towards a Shell Filling Station near Agbogbloshie for a planned robbery operation.

Acting on the intelligence, a team from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate, supported by personnel from the Operational Unit, moved to the area to intercept the suspects.

According to the Police Command, the team encountered the four men at the Galoway Police Barrier, where an exchange of gunfire subsequently occurred.

During the confrontation, one of the suspects was shot, while the remaining three allegedly abandoned their motorbikes and fled into the surrounding area.

The injured suspect was reportedly found in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle bearing serial number 79-HF-3014. The weapon was fitted with a double magazine containing 136 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

The recovered motorcycles, firearm, and ammunition have been retained as exhibits as investigations continue into the alleged robbery operation.

The Police Command said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend the three suspects who reportedly escaped during the gunfire. Authorities are also working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the planned robbery and determine whether the suspects may be connected to other criminal activities.

“Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects and establish the full circumstances of the planned robbery operation,” the Accra Regional Police Command said.

The incident highlights the risks associated with armed robbery operations, particularly in densely populated commercial areas where businesses, transport operators, and residents may be exposed to violent crime.

Agbogbloshie and its surrounding communities are important commercial and residential areas within Accra, with significant daily movement of traders, workers, motorists, and other members of the public. Any reported armed confrontation in such an area can therefore raise concerns about public safety and the protection of lives and property.

The recovery of an AK-47 rifle and a large quantity of ammunition is expected to form a major part of the police investigation. Authorities may examine the firearm’s history, the source of the ammunition, and whether the weapon has been linked to previous criminal incidents.

The identification and arrest of the remaining suspects could also provide further information about the alleged target of the operation, the planning process, and the possible involvement of other individuals.

While the Police Command has described the deceased as a suspected armed robber, the allegations remain subject to investigation. The circumstances of the shooting, including the sequence of events during the exchange of gunfire, will be relevant to any subsequent inquiry.

The Police Command said it would continue intelligence-led operations aimed at combating armed robbery and other violent crimes across the region.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist law-enforcement agencies in preventing criminal activities. Corrections Policy

As investigations continue, the police are expected to intensify efforts to locate the three suspects who fled the scene and bring them before the appropriate authorities to answer questions relating to the alleged planned robbery.
