Motorists who do not have any urgent reason to be in Kaneshie should avoid the area as the temporary road closure in Pamprom Junction is expected to trigger severe traffic congestion. Editorial Standards
The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project gave this advice.This announcement comes following the closure of the westbound carriageway of the Dr Busia Highway at Pamprom Junction last Monday, 7 th September 2026, to pave way for significant drainage improvement works under the GARID Project.
The undertaking which forms part of the project to tackle flood challenges along the Kaneshie – Mallam corridor will run through November with efforts expected to allow for reopening of Pamprom Junction during the first week of December.
Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, GARID Project Coordinator revealed in a speech on Monday that the closure will be a pressure multiplier for already busy areas like Kaneshie and therefore appealed to drivers, who do not have their final destination in Kaneshie to desist from adding to the congestion already existing within the environment.
“What we advise is that if you do not have any business in Kaneshie as a destination, as much as possible try to avoid it, because we are going to have enormous traffic, and it will really be very inconveniencing” he said. Corrections Policy
The closed road passes through areas like the Obetsebi-Lamptey, Circle, Nkrumah Circle and Korle Bu Mortuary road, Graphic Road in directions leading to Pamprom Junction, first Light Junction.
Authorities have put measures in place and made alternative diversions to reduce the volume of traffic during the construction period.
Traffic Management efforts will see road users diverting from Korle Bu Mortuary Road Traffic Signal, Graphic Road to Kaneshie or Mallam before the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange through to Ring Road Central, Atta Mills Highway via Kaneshie, through Dansoman or Korle Bu before going to Mallam or Sakaman, Motorway linking from first Light before using that segment of N1 and Abosey Okai taking detour via Kaneshie North on the N1.
Other diversions include from Mataheko by way of the Awodome Cemetery Road through Awodome Roundabout to Mataheko road before connecting first light junction along with traffic moving from the Obetsebi Interchange – Oblogo Traffic Light-Mataheko axis.
The road diversions are necessary because of the size of project which is an underground double-cell concrete box drain measuring about 10 metres width that would span from Pamprom Junction through to first light junction, replacing a 1.2 metre twin pipe structure and extending the line to the connection works in Accra Academy.
The project according to authorities has the sole aim of enhancing the drainage capacity of flood-prone areas like Kaneshie and its environs, with a construction duration resulting in obvious congestion and inconvenience to motorists, residents, businesses and all stakeholders for some time. Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo stated that a reduction in the numbers would help move proceedings quickly so as to open up the road again for users.
Dr Kwadwo has urged road users to cooperate with officials of the Ghana Police service, and be very conscious of the diversions which would be signposted accordingly with advance warning signs.
Meanwhile, the Work Housing and Water Resources Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim after an assessment of the work preparations advised that construction workers strive to minimize the construction period, for the sake of motorist and road users, during his visit earlier in September.
The GARID Coordinator has also assured that relevant agencies like MTTP (Motor Traffic and Transport Department) and the relevant municipal/metropolitan assembly will provide directional information for the traveling public.
While Pamprom junction reopens December, first light junction segment of that road up to Kaneshie station will remain closed until August 2027 to give contractors leverage to complete underground operations of the drain, a segment which runs from there to the Cocoa Clinic roundabout scheduled to begin in September 2027.
