More than 10 students have been arrested following violent clashes between Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Eastern Region, with police beginning investigations into the incident.
More than 10 students have been arrested in connection with clashes between Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The confrontation occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, and resulted in damage to facilities on the two school campuses. The incident has renewed concerns about student violence and the need for stronger security and discipline measures in Ghanaian senior high schools.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, confirmed that several students had been apprehended following the clashes. He said the police were working to identify other students who may have participated in the incident.
According to the police commander, some students fled when law enforcement officers arrived at the schools. The police, however, indicated that efforts were underway to trace those who escaped and establish the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The police are also compiling a list of individuals suspected of participating in the violence. Investigators are expected to establish what triggered the confrontation and determine the extent of responsibility of those involved.
Reports indicate that six Okuapeman students sustained injuries during the incident. Four of them were treated and discharged, while two remained on admission at the time of reporting.
The incident has attracted attention because it involves two educational institutions and resulted in damage to school property. Beyond the immediate physical damage, such incidents can disrupt academic activities and create fear among students, teachers and parents.
The development comes at a time when concerns about discipline in Ghana’s second-cycle institutions have intensified. Education stakeholders have increasingly called for approaches that combine effective discipline with counselling, conflict resolution and improved supervision.
School authorities have an important role to play in identifying tensions before they escalate. Communication between school management, students, parents and security agencies can also help prevent disagreements from developing into larger confrontations.
The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that individuals found to have participated in unlawful activities will be dealt with according to the law.
The incident also highlights the importance of students understanding the consequences of violent behaviour. Schools are expected to provide environments where disagreements can be resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Authorities are therefore likely to face pressure to ensure that the affected schools return to normal academic activities while also addressing the underlying issues that contributed to the clashes.
