Afrobeats artiste Kojo Blak has spoken about the difficulties faced by emerging musicians trying to establish themselves in Ghana’s competitive music industry, describing the process of securing a first hit song as the toughest phase of an artiste’s career.
Speaking on the On The Line podcast, Kojo Blak said breaking through and getting audiences to recognise an artiste requires considerable effort, but maintaining relevance becomes relatively easier once that recognition has been achieved.
“Getting your first hit is the hardest as an artist. That is where there’s more work. When you get people to know you, it becomes a little easier.”
The musician also revealed that he does not view fellow artistes as rivals, saying his main focus is on improving himself and building on his previous achievements.
“I’m not in competition with anybody. I’m in competition with myself. I want to do better than I did before, even with my live performances but I don’t feel pressured.”
Kojo Blak further explained that his upcoming debut album is not being created with the intention of securing festive-season performances or landing slots on major entertainment shows.
“I don’t really care about festive seasons. I’m not making the album to go and perform on big shows.”
The artiste is preparing to release his debut album, which is expected to feature collaborations with other musicians.
