Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has appealed to the Chinese government to provide additional financial support for the proposed University of Science and Technology in Damongo.
Mr Iddrisu made the appeal when he met the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Cong Song, to discuss measures to advance the project.
The proposed university is expected to serve as a centre of excellence in Science and Technology, Robotics, Digital Sciences, Artificial Intelligence and other emerging areas.
The Ghanaian government secured a US$30 million grant from China last year to facilitate the commencement of construction. However, the Education Minister said the amount would not be enough to complete the project.
According to him, the construction and equipping of a new university could cost more than US$100 million, making additional funding and stronger partnerships necessary to bring the project to completion.
Mr Iddrisu stressed that the government remains committed to expanding access to quality tertiary education across the country.
He disclosed that plans are also underway to establish universities in regions that currently do not have one, as part of efforts to promote equitable access to higher education and support balanced national development.
For his part, the Chinese Ambassador commended Mr Iddrisu for his leadership and commitment to transforming Ghana’s education sector.
H.E. Cong Song reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ghana in education and other areas, describing the partnership as important to the development of both countries.
