WhatsApp says it is working to restore access to accounts that were mistakenly disabled after users across several countries reported being unexpectedly locked out of the messaging platform. The issue triggered widespread complaints from affected users, many of whom said their accounts had been placed under review despite no unusual activity on their part.

According to users, WhatsApp displayed a notification stating that their account activity and device information were being reviewed to determine whether they complied with the platform’s Terms of Service. The message indicated that the review process could take up to 24 hours, leaving many unable to access personal and business conversations.

Responding to the incident, Meta acknowledged the problem and confirmed that it had begun restoring affected accounts. The company said its automated systems are designed to detect and remove accounts that abuse the platform but admitted that legitimate users can occasionally be flagged by mistake.

“We are always working to stay ahead of those trying to abuse our service,” a Meta spokesperson said, adding that the company had taken steps to reinstate accounts affected by the error as quickly as possible. However, Meta did not explain what caused the unexpected suspensions or indicate whether users in specific regions were more heavily affected.

Technology analysts say incidents involving automated account restrictions highlight the challenge of balancing platform security with user experience. While automated moderation helps combat spam and malicious activity, they note that inaccurate enforcement can disrupt communication for individuals and businesses that rely on messaging services daily.

The disruption comes as WhatsApp continues to expand its services for more than three billion monthly users worldwide, making even short-lived technical issues capable of affecting a significant number of people. Users whose accounts remain inaccessible have been advised to wait for the review process while the company completes its restoration efforts.
