The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced significant upward adjustments to the price floors for petroleum products for the upcoming pricing window, signaling mounting cost pressures for transport operators, manufacturing industries, and everyday consumers alike.

According to the new schedule released for the first pricing window of August, the price floor for diesel recorded the sharpest surge, climbing by 18.3 percent to reach GH₵16.97 per litre up from the previous GH₵14.35.

Similarly, the price floor for petrol has been adjusted upward to GH₵14.53 per litre, representing a 9.4 percent increase from the previous window’s benchmark of GH₵13.28. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) also saw a notable rise, moving to GH₵11.06 per kilogram from GH₵10.19, reflecting an 8.5 percent increase.

Global Pressures and Local Currency Depreciation

Market analysts attribute these steep fuel price floor increases to a combination of persistent global crude oil market pressures and a weakening local currency. International benchmark prices have experienced considerable volatility over recent weeks, driving up the Free On Board (FOB) costs of refined products imported into the country.

Furthermore, data from the Bank of Ghana indicates that the cedi has faced continuous depreciation pressures against major trading currencies, closing out July with a notable decline. This currency depreciation has directly inflated the procurement cost of petroleum products, forcing the regulatory authority to revise its minimum pricing thresholds to maintain stability in the downstream petroleum sector.

Transport unions, commercial drivers, and industrial players have expressed deep concern over the development. Many industry stakeholders warn that the sharp jump in diesel prices will heavily impact cargo transport, agricultural production, mining operations, and manufacturing overheads.

Expectations at the Pumps and Consumer Reactions

With the new price floors taking immediate effect, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are expected to adjust their pump prices accordingly across the country. Motorists and commuters have been urged to prepare for potential financial repercussions, as increased diesel and petrol costs typically trigger secondary upward adjustments in public transport fares, food distribution expenses, and general commodity prices.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) and various consumer advocacy groups have continuously called for targeted interventions to cushion vulnerable segments of the population from the cascading effects of recurring fuel hikes. Meanwhile, regulatory bodies are being urged to intensify market surveillance to ensure that petroleum retailers adhere strictly to guidelines without engaging in arbitrary price build-ups during the transition.

As the downstream sector navigates these headwinds, the trajectory of future pricing windows will largely depend on the stabilization of international crude markets and the recovery of the local currency against major trading partners.
