The Government of Ghana has approved amendments to the country’s mining legislation aimed at strengthening oversight of the mining sector and tackling illegal mining activities. The revised law, which is expected to be submitted to Parliament, forms part of broader efforts to improve governance and increase benefits from the country’s mineral resources.
According to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the amendments will replace the current reconnaissance and prospecting licences with a single exploration licence valid for five years. The new framework will also require mining companies to negotiate community development agreements directly with host communities, ensuring that residents benefit more from mining activities in their areas.
The proposed legislation further introduces district mining committees to increase local participation in the licensing process and reduce speculative acquisition of mining concessions. Government officials believe the reforms will promote transparency, environmental protection and sustainable development within the sector.
