As Ghana enters the festive season, the Ghana Police Service alongside other security agencies has launched an extensive nationwide operation aimed at deterring crime and reinforcing public safety in the lead up to Christmas. Security chiefs have issued a clear warning to criminals that they will face swift action if they attempt to disrupt peace and security during a period traditionally marked by increased travel, commerce, and social gatherings.

Officials from the Police Service, the Immigration Service, and other internal security agencies outlined the strategy during a press briefing attended by senior commanders. The operation will encompass heightened patrols in major cities, towns and transport hubs as well as checkpoints on major highways to curb robberies, carjacking, unlawful firearm possession and highway assaults. According to security chiefs, the aim is to boost citizen confidence and deter criminals who may exploit the festive period to commit offences.

Commanders have also assured the public that intelligence driven policing will be central to the operation. This involves monitoring areas known for high crime rates, deploying undercover units and collaborating with community watch groups to gather actionable information. The emphasis is not only on reaction but also on proactive disruption of criminal networks that target unsuspecting residents, visitors and businesses during December and early January.

Analysts say such operations are necessary because patterns from previous years show a rise in certain categories of crime as people move around the country to celebrate with family. Opportunities for theft and robbery tend to increase when people carry cash, gifts and valuables. With increased commercial activity and crowded public spaces, law enforcement agencies have stressed that joint action with the public is critical to successful crime prevention.

Community leaders and civil society groups have welcomed the move, encouraging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities. They also called for fair treatment of all citizens during the operations, underscoring that law enforcement should balance robust action with respect for human rights and dignity.

The Police have also urged drivers and commuters on major road networks to adhere to traffic rules, wear seat belts, avoid speeding, and abstain from drinking and driving. Road patrol units are expected to be stationed along popular routes to handle emergencies and enforce regulations aimed at reducing road related deaths and injuries.

As the country prepares for festive celebrations, the security operation signals seriousness in maintaining public safety. Authorities have reiterated that safety and stability are integral to national development and that no effort will be spared to ensure that citizens, residents and visitors enjoy a peaceful festive season.
