Lionel Messi has opened up about his long-standing rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, stating clearly that while they share mutual respect, they are not friends.

Speaking to DSports, Messi emphasized that despite the intense competition between the two football icons over the past decade, their interactions have remained professional and respectful.

“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he’s had and continues to have, because he’s still competing at the highest level,” Messi said.

“We’re not friends, obviously, because we don’t spend time together, but we’ve always treated each other with a lot of respect.”

Legendary careers, different paths

Messi and Ronaldo dominated world football between 2008 and 2023, winning 13 Ballon d’Or titles between them — Messi with eight, and Ronaldo with five. Although both players are now approaching the end of their careers, they continue to break records and lift trophies.

Just recently, Ronaldo helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League, while Messi scored for Inter Miami in their FIFA Club World Cup victory over Porto — a goal that edges him closer to setting a new Club World Cup record.
