Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has returned to public duties with renewed strength and optimism following a period of medical leave abroad.
In her first public remarks since returning home on Thursday, May 22, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support she received and affirmed her commitment to continue serving the nation with renewed determination.
“So I’m very happy to be back,” she said warmly. “There’s so much that has happened, and so much more we need to do. But I believe that through our collective will, we will do much more for our country.”
The Vice President was taken ill on March 28, 2025, and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) the following day. On medical advice, she proceeded on a three-week leave starting April 7 and traveled abroad for further treatment as a precaution to ensure full recovery.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed heartfelt thanks to God, the medical staff, and all who stood by her throughout the difficult period.
“I want to say thanks to God. His mercies have been infinite, as always. I also thank the medical staff for seeing the right things and making the right proposals,” she said.
She paid special tribute to President John Dramani Mahama for his swift response during her moment of need, recalling how he appeared “as if from nowhere” and immediately set things in motion.
“To my boss, that day — I don’t even know where you appeared from — but you came and quickly set in motion what we needed to do.”
The Vice President also extended her deepest appreciation to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement, for his personal support.
“He stopped at nothing to ensure I had what I needed. He came to the hospital and just sat by me — and that was healing in itself. So, my little Boss, I’m very, very grateful,” she said with emotion.
Upon her arrival at Kotoka International Airport, she was received to a warm welcome led by President Mahama and his wife, Lordina. Other dignitaries present included Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and senior government officials.
President Mahama, in a light-hearted remark, told her, “They’ve threatened to impeach me; I’m happy to have you back,” highlighting the gap her absence had created in leadership.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s return is expected to re-energise key government efforts as the administration continues to implement its agenda of national recovery and inclusive development.
