SONABHY to Leverage BOST’s Fuel Supply Chain for Fuel Security

Burkina Faso’s National Hydrocarbons Company (SONABHY) is set to enhance its fuel security by leveraging the extensive petroleum supply chain infrastructure of Ghana’s Bulk Energy Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST). This strategic partnership aims to ensure a stable and cost-effective supply of petroleum products from Ghana to Burkina Faso, utilizing BOST’s pipelines, river transport, bulk road vehicles, and strategically located storage terminals.

Strengthening Cross-Border Petroleum Trade

At a recent high-level meeting in Accra, both state-owned energy companies reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation. A joint technical team will assess BOST’s operational capacity to enhance petroleum trade efficiency and reduce supply chain disruptions.

BOST’s fuel distribution network is built on a multi-modal logistics system that ensures efficiency and reliability. Key components of this network include:

  • Tema-Akosombo Petroleum Pipeline (TAPP) – Facilitates fuel movement from Tema to Akosombo.
  • Buipe-Bolgatanga Petroleum Product Pipeline (B2P3) – Ensures seamless fuel transfer from Ghana’s middle belt to the northern regions and Burkina Faso.
  • River Transport via Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC) – Reduces road transport pressure by moving fuel from Akosombo to Buipe.
  • Strategic Storage Facilities – BOST’s Accra Plains, Akosombo, Buipe, and Bolgatanga terminals serve as critical supply hubs for both domestic and cross-border trade.

Commitment to Energy Security

At the meeting, BOST Managing Director, Mr. Afetsi Awoonor, emphasized the company’s readiness to support SONABHY in ensuring a steady and secure supply of petroleum products.

“The strategic use of our pipelines, storage depots, river barges, road transport partnerships, and the Blue Ocean terminal allows for a more efficient fuel distribution network, benefitting both parties.” – Mr. Afetsi Awoonor

On his part, SONABHY’s Managing Director, Mr. Wendpanga Aimé, expressed confidence in the partnership, highlighting its potential to stabilize fuel supply and control costs.

“With a strong capital base of 20 billion CFA Francs, SONABHY is ready to invest in long-term trade agreements with BOST. This collaboration is critical to ensuring consistent and cost-effective fuel supply for Burkina Faso.” – Mr. Wendpanga Aimé

Expanding Ghana-Burkina Faso Energy Cooperation

Beyond petroleum trade, Burkina Faso has requested increased electricity exports from Ghana to support its industrial and economic growth. During the engagement, Burkina Faso’s Energy Minister, Yacouba Zabré Gouba, led a delegation to tour BOST’s Bolgatanga Depot and GRIDCo’s Navrongo substation, exploring opportunities for expanded energy transmission.

This renewed Ghana-Burkina Faso energy partnership, SONABHY championed by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, and his Burkinabe counterpart, strengthens cross-border petroleum trade and ensures that Ghana’s advanced energy logistics network contributes to regional energy security and trade efficiency across West Africa.
