Eugene Opoku-Acheampong, an uncle of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi, has alleged that the Akwatia Member of Parliament’s death was not natural. In a shocking revelation, he claimed that the 2024-elected legislator may have been spiritually targeted because of the strategic importance of his parliamentary seat. His remarks have stirred public interest and reignited conversations about political rivalry and the use of spiritual means to gain influence in Ghanaian politics.

Speaking to media following the news of the MP’s death, Opoku-Acheampong said, “My nephew didn’t just die; someone is behind it because of the Akwatia seat.” He implied that the death was not the result of illness or accident, but rather, a spiritually orchestrated attack — a claim that, while not supported by medical evidence, reflects ongoing beliefs held by many in parts of Ghana about spiritual warfare in political life.

Calls for Investigation and Calm as Constituency Mourns

Ernest Yaw Kumi, who passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, after what was officially described as a brief illness, was a first-time MP on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He won the Akwatia seat in the 2024 general elections in a closely contested race, defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Henry Yiadom Boakye. His victory, however, faced a legal challenge shortly after, making his time in office turbulent.

While no official statement has been released by health authorities detailing the cause of death, the family’s claims are likely to raise calls for transparency and possibly an autopsy. Parliament has since adjourned in honour of the late MP, and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin offered an emotional tribute, praising Kumi’s dedication and integrity.

As the Akwatia constituency mourns, some constituents are also beginning to question the circumstances surrounding his sudden passing. The allegation by Opoku-Acheampong may fuel calls for further investigation, even as political observers urge restraint and respect for the mourning family.
