President Mahama Nominates Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo as KATH CEO Following Prof. Addai-Mensah’s Dismissal

Kumasi, Ghana – May 5, 2025
President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), succeeding Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, who was relieved of his duties last week.
Dr. Baidoo’s Background and Qualifications
Dr. Baidoo is an orthopaedic surgeon at KATH, where he manages both orthopaedic and trauma cases in the Department of Surgery. He also contributes to medical education by teaching students and residents. Additionally, he serves as the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association.
His nomination was communicated in a letter dated April 30, 2025, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, and addressed to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. The letter directed the minister to take necessary steps to formalize the appointment in accordance with the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 525), as amended.
Prof. Addai-Mensah’s Tenure and Dismissal

Prof. Addai-Mensah, who had served as CEO since 2022, was informed of his dismissal during a meeting with the Health Minister on May 2, 2025. During his tenure, he oversaw significant initiatives, including the “Heal Komfo Anokye Project,” which aimed to modernize the hospital. Under his leadership, the number of dialysis machines increased from two to over twenty, and a new pharmaceutical block was constructed.
Reactions to the Dismissal
The removal of Prof. Addai-Mensah has sparked protests from the Asante Youth Association, who argue that the decision could stall ongoing reforms at the hospital. They have called on President Mahama and the Health Minister to reverse the decision, emphasizing the significant developments achieved during Prof. Addai-Mensah’s tenure.
