NEC begins early preparations to select next flagbearer for 2028 elections

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially scheduled its next presidential primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026. This was confirmed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, following a crucial NEC meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

According to Kodua, the date was chosen in line with the party’s constitution and does not require any amendments. To facilitate the smooth organisation of the primaries, the NEC has appointed a nine-member committee chaired by former Bekwai MP, Joseph Osei Owusu, to oversee all related activities and ensure transparency in the process.

New Committee to Oversee Transparent and Fair Internal Elections

The newly formed committee is expected to play a vital role in ensuring that the 2026 presidential primaries are free, fair, and inclusive. This team will develop the full roadmap for the primaries, including the opening and closing of nominations, vetting processes, guidelines for campaigning, and enforcement of a strict code of conduct for all aspirants.

With the primaries now firmly on the calendar, the NPP is expected to release these comprehensive guidelines in the coming weeks. Party officials have assured the public and members that the process will reflect the democratic ideals of the party.

In the party’s last presidential primaries held in 2023, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured victory with 61.4% of valid votes, defeating contenders such as Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong. As political momentum begins to build, analysts and grassroots members are keen to see whether any former contenders will return or if fresh names will emerge.

The party’s leadership remains committed to ensuring a peaceful and credible primary, emphasizing the importance of unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
