Greater Accra Minister Linda Ocloo Imposes GH₵2,000 Fine on Street Traders Amid Decongestion Exercise

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, has announced the imposition of a GH₵2,000 fine on unauthorized street traders operating within the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra. The directive comes as part of a broader decongestion initiative spearheaded by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), which officially commenced today, Tuesday, May 20.
AMA Intensifies Crackdown on Street Trading
The exercise, jointly carried out by the AMA and KoKMA, is aimed at restoring order, easing human and vehicular traffic, and enhancing urban cleanliness. Minister Ocloo emphasized that the fine is intended to deter unregulated street trading, which has long contributed to congestion and sanitation challenges in the capital.
“Street trading must be conducted in a manner that supports urban planning and safety,” she said. “We are not against people making a living, but it must be done in a regulated environment that does not compromise public space.”
Plans for Regulated Street Vending
Minister Ocloo further revealed that discussions are underway to develop structured frameworks that would allow street vending to continue in designated and properly managed zones. This includes the identification of specific trading enclaves where hawkers can operate without interfering with pedestrian walkways or road traffic.

In an official press release, the AMA reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders, including market associations and transport unions, to ensure the success of the exercise and the sustainable use of city spaces.
Authorities have cautioned traders and the public to comply with the directive or face arrest, fines, and seizure of goods.
