The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has disclosed that the government is awaiting final approval to recruit 4,460 equipment operators across the country.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a road infrastructure review meeting, Mr. Vanderpuye explained that the recruitment forms part of ongoing efforts to bolster the implementation of the DRIP, which seeks to enhance the quality of roads at the district level to spur economic development and improve rural connectivity.
A Major Boost for Local Employment
According to Mr. Vanderpuye, once approved, the recruitment exercise will offer jobs to thousands of Ghanaian youth with skills in operating road construction machinery, such as motor graders, compactors, and excavators.
“We have received overwhelming interest from potential applicants. We are only waiting for the green light from the appropriate authorities to begin the hiring process,” he stated.
He added that the move would not only improve road infrastructure in underserved areas but also contribute to tackling unemployment among technically trained individuals.
Improving Roads, Empowering Communities
The DRIP initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Roads and Highways, targets feeder and access roads in all 261 districts across the country. It aims to support local governments in addressing poor road conditions that hamper movement, especially during the rainy season.
Mr. Vanderpuye emphasized that “the success of this programme will significantly enhance agriculture, education, and healthcare delivery by ensuring easy transportation of goods and services.”
He also assured stakeholders that the selection process will be transparent and based on competence and regional needs.
