Ghana Security Services Donate GH₵1 Million to MahamaCares Fund

Ghana’s security agencies have jointly donated GH₵1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust (MahamaCares) Fund, a presidential health initiative aimed at providing life-saving support for citizens battling chronic illnesses.

The donation was made by a coalition of key national institutions including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Prisons Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Narcotics Control Commission, Ghana Refugee Board, National Peace Council, National Identification Authority, and the Gaming Commission.

Mahama Applauds Security Services for Compassionate Gesture

President John Dramani Mahama took to his official Facebook page to commend the donation, describing it as a “commendable, patriotic, and compassionate gesture.” He emphasized that the contribution represents more than financial aid—it reflects the evolving role of the security services in nation-building.

“You have the mandate to protect us and make us safe,” President Mahama noted, “and you’ve extended that mandate to not only keeping us safe but keeping us well and alive.”

The MahamaCares Fund is a national response to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Ghana, which account for over 40% of national mortality, according to health officials. The fund targets critical conditions such as kidney failure, cancer, stroke, and diabetes, which continue to cause financial devastation and emotional strain for thousands of families.

President Mahama stressed that the gesture from the security services—coming after a similar contribution from the military high command—will significantly enhance access to treatment and expand the reach of the initiative.

“Your support will make a significant difference in the lives of many Ghanaians,” he affirmed.

As the MahamaCares Fund continues to gather momentum, President Mahama is calling on all Ghanaians, corporate bodies, and civic institutions to join the cause and contribute to transforming Ghana’s healthcare landscape. The fund stands as a powerful symbol of national empathy, equity, and proactive leadership in the fight against chronic disease.
