Strong Assurance from Upper East Minister: 2025 WASSCE to Proceed Despite Bawku Conflict

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Akamugri, has offered strong reassurance that the 2025 (WASSCE) will go on as scheduled, despite the tense security situation in Bawku and surrounding communities.
In an interview, Mr. Akamugri emphasized that adequate security measures have been rolled out to safeguard the lives of both candidates and examination supervisors during the exam period.
“During a crucial meeting with stakeholders, including Ghana Education Service (GES) officials, school governing boards, and the traditional council, we agreed on a comprehensive plan that allows WASSCE candidates to take part in the practical exams starting on August 5,” he stated.

He further explained that, “The students will be safely transported to write their exams. We are also putting in place additional arrangements to ensure they complete the rest of their papers without disruption.”
Mr. Akamugri clarified that the reopening of schools for non-final-year students, particularly those in first and second year, will depend on the evolving security dynamics in the coming days.
His assurances come in the wake of a government-led evacuation operation triggered by escalating violence in Bawku, Nalerigu, and nearby areas. Authorities have prioritized the safety of students following reports that some had been deliberately targeted amid the unrest.

A statement issued by the Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye, confirmed the urgent nature of the intervention. While the exact number of students to be evacuated was not disclosed, Mr. Akamugri noted that the exercise will cover four schools within the Bawku Municipality.
Despite the challenges, education authorities and security agencies remain committed to ensuring that final-year students in the affected regions do not miss their opportunity to sit for this critical examination.
