A Nigerian man has sparked a family controversy after intervening to stop his younger sister’s traditional wedding just two hours before the ceremony, following the discovery that her fiancé had allegedly concealed the existence of a child from her.
The 29 year old man recounted the incident in a Facebook post shared by GistReel.com, explaining how what was expected to be a memorable occasion for his 26 year old sister turned into a family crisis after he learned about the groom to be’s secret.
The couple had reportedly been in a relationship for three years, with preparations for their traditional marriage already completed. Both families had invested financially in the ceremony, while the man’s mother had reportedly taken out a loan to help cover the expenses.
However, the situation took an unexpected turn when the groom’s best friend privately contacted the bride’s brother with information about his sister’s fiancé.
According to the man, he was told that the groom to be had a two year old child with a woman based in Ibadan, a revelation that came just two hours before the traditional marriage was scheduled to begin.
Concerned about the development, the brother confronted the groom, who reportedly broke down and pleaded with him. The groom allegedly explained that his family had advised him to keep the child’s existence from his fiancée until after they had married.
Faced with the difficult decision of whether to remain silent or inform his sister before she entered the marriage, the brother decided that she deserved to know the truth.
He subsequently disclosed the information to her, but the revelation reportedly left her devastated, causing her to collapse upon hearing the news.
The wedding was eventually called off, despite the fact that guests had already arrived and preparations for the ceremony were well underway.
The decision, however, triggered disagreements within the family, particularly between the brother and his mother.
His mother reportedly became furious, accusing him of bringing embarrassment upon the family at a time when the groom’s family had already received the traditional drinks and guests had been seated and served food.
His father, however, supported his son’s decision, apparently believing that exposing the truth before the marriage was the right thing to do.
The incident also divided opinion among the man’s friends. While some commended him for protecting his sister from entering a marriage without knowing an important detail about her partner’s past, others questioned whether he had handled the situation appropriately by stopping the ceremony at the last minute.
Some suggested that the matter could have been addressed differently, with a few even joking that the wedding should have proceeded long enough for the guests to enjoy their jollof rice before the couple dealt with the issue.
With his family divided over his actions, the man is now questioning whether cancelling the wedding was the right decision or whether he should have approached the situation differently.
The incident has raised questions about honesty, trust and the importance of disclosing significant information before marriage.
