Justin Frimpong Kodua has been re-elected General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), securing another term in one of the party’s most influential administrative positions as the opposition party reorganises ahead of the 2028 general election. Editorial Ethics & Independence

Mr Kodua secured 4,486 votes in the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

His victory came ahead of three other contenders, giving the incumbent a substantial mandate to continue overseeing the party’s national secretariat.

Former Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro Member of Parliament Sylvester Tetteh placed second with 1,340 votes. Former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi obtained 162 votes, while Dr Charles Dwamena, the party’s former National Treasurer and another contender, secured 126 votes.

The election formed part of a broader exercise to select a new team of national executives who will lead the NPP for the next four years.

The conference also saw former General Secretary John Boadu elected National Chairman, while Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover became National Organiser and Abanga Fuseini Yakubu was elected National Youth Organiser.

Kodua’s re-election gives the NPP continuity at its national secretariat at a time when the party is seeking to rebuild its structures following its defeat in the 2024 general election.

The General Secretary plays a central role in the day-to-day administration of a political party, including organisational coordination, communication and implementation of decisions taken by the party’s leadership.

His continued presence in the position is therefore expected to provide institutional experience as the NPP develops its strategy for the next electoral cycle.

Mr Kodua, popularly known as “JFK,” first became NPP General Secretary in July 2022 after defeating then-incumbent John Boadu at the party’s national delegates conference. He received 2,837 votes in that contest, compared with Mr Boadu’s 2,524 votes. Corrections Policy

Before becoming General Secretary, Kodua had built experience in both professional and political administration. He is a lawyer and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Land Economy and an LLB from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

He subsequently obtained his professional legal qualification from the Ghana School of Law. He also holds a diploma in financial management and an ICT qualification from the United Kingdom.

His professional background includes legal practice, work with Supersport UK and public-sector administration.

From 2017 to 2022, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency, where he was responsible for managing a major government programme focused on employment opportunities for young people.

Kodua has also spent several years working within the NPP’s organisational structures. Before assuming national office, he served as Deputy Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser and later became the substantive Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser.

His experience at the regional and grassroots levels contributed to his organisational profile within the party. Editorial Standards

During his first term as General Secretary, Kodua highlighted several organisational initiatives, including changes to aspects of the party’s electoral structures, strengthening of the legal directorate, implementation of constitutional reforms associated with the Oquaye Committee, expansion of the digital membership database and reforms relating to parliamentary primaries.

Ahead of the 2026 election, his campaign was built around the message “Prepared, Well-Positioned, Focused, Rebuild.”

He argued that the NPP’s experience following its 2024 electoral defeat should inform a deliberate effort to strengthen the party rather than trigger disorganisation.

Among the priorities associated with his campaign were completing the party’s national digital membership database, maintaining neutrality in internal elections, improving resource distribution to constituency structures and strengthening polling-station operations.

His re-election means he will now have the opportunity to pursue those priorities while working with a new national executive team. Newscard

The result also places expectations on Kodua to help bridge internal divisions that may have emerged during the competitive leadership contest.

With four candidates competing for the General Secretary position, the new leadership will need to bring together supporters of the different contenders and maintain cohesion within the party.

The NPP’s new executives are expected to focus heavily on organisational rebuilding and preparations for the 2028 election.

The party’s newly elected National Chairman, John Boadu, has already called for unity and stronger grassroots organisation, stressing that the party’s future success will depend on collective effort rather than individual ambitions.

For Kodua, the next four years will therefore involve balancing the demands of internal administration with the wider political task of rebuilding the NPP’s electoral fortunes. Privacy Policy & Terms

His decisive victory provides him with a strong mandate, but it also raises expectations among delegates and party members who will look to the General Secretary to translate his campaign commitments into practical organisational reforms.

As the NPP begins its new leadership era, Kodua’s continued presence at the national secretariat is likely to make him a key figure in shaping the party’s organisation, communication and grassroots mobilisation as it prepares for the 2028 general election.
