The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to elect its national executives on October 3, 2026, with four candidates contesting the position of General Secretary. Editorial Ethics & Independence

The contest features incumbent Justin Frimpong Kodua, former Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfro Member of Parliament Sylvester Tetteh, former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi and current National Treasurer Dr Charles Dwamena.

The election is taking place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi as the party reorganises its national leadership following its defeat in the 2024 general election.

The General Secretary is responsible for significant aspects of the party’s day-to-day administration, organisational coordination and communication.

The four candidates have different professional backgrounds and have outlined varying priorities for the party’s organisation and preparations for the 2028 general election.

Their ballot positions are Sylvester Tetteh at number one, Eugene Boakye Antwi at number two, Justin Frimpong Kodua at number three and Dr Charles Dwamena at number four.

Sylvester Tetteh

Sylvester Tetteh enters the contest with experience spanning the NPP’s grassroots structures, Parliament and public administration.

He served as Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfro from 2021 to 2025 and previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority and Deputy Minister for Information.

His political involvement in the NPP began at the grassroots level. His experience includes serving as a polling station executive and constituency secretary, as well as President of the Tertiary Students Confederacy Network (TESCON). He also contested the Ningo Prampram parliamentary seat before later becoming MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfro.

Tetteh has presented himself as a candidate focused on grassroots mobilisation, innovation and technology. His campaign message includes calls for stronger party structures, greater engagement with members and a more effective political communication strategy while the NPP remains in opposition.

Eugene Boakye Antwi

Eugene Boakye Antwi is a former Member of Parliament for Subin and former Deputy Minister for Works and Housing.

Born in the Ashanti Region in 1970, he has professional experience in banking, business administration and public service. He worked with Barclays Bank, now known as Absa, before working with the Lord Chancellor’s Department in the United Kingdom. He also served as a director of EUGASS Limited.

His educational background includes a Higher National Diploma from Westminster College in the United Kingdom, a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and a postgraduate diploma in Market Research from the University of Westminster. Corrections Policy

Within the NPP, Boakye Antwi rose through the party’s UK and Ireland branch before entering Parliament. He served on parliamentary committees including the Special Budget Committee and the Lands and Forestry Committee.

His campaign is centred on a five-point agenda known as UNITE, covering party unity, grassroots development, internal discipline and efficiency, rebuilding trust and developing an electoral strategy for 2028.

Justin Frimpong Kodua

Justin Frimpong Kodua, popularly known as JFK, is the incumbent General Secretary and is seeking another term.

Born in Kumasi in 1982, Kodua is a lawyer and politician. He holds qualifications in land economy and law and was called to the Ghana Bar after completing his legal education. He also holds an ICT certificate and a diploma in financial management.

Before becoming General Secretary, Kodua served as Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency between 2017 and 2022. He also held youth leadership positions within the NPP in the Ashanti Region.

He was elected General Secretary in July 2022 after defeating John Boadu in the party’s national executive elections.

During his tenure, Kodua has highlighted reforms involving the party’s electoral college, legal directorate, digital membership database, parliamentary primaries and organisational structures.

His campaign message for the current contest focuses on rebuilding the party, improving resources for constituencies, supporting grassroots members and strengthening unity.

Dr Charles Dwamena

Dr Charles Dwamena, popularly known as Dr China, is the NPP’s current National Treasurer and another contender for the General Secretary position.

His professional background spans medicine, education, diplomacy, business administration and entrepreneurship.

He holds a medical degree from Wenzhou University in China, a master’s degree in Clinical Sciences from Plymouth University and an MBA in Leadership and Sustainability from the University of Cumbria. Editorial Standards

Dwamena has also held several positions within the NPP, including chairman of the party’s China branch and chairman of its Asia Pacific Caucus.

He served as a representative at international and regional programmes focused on internal party democracy and democratic governance.

As National Treasurer, he has highlighted the digitisation of party dues collection and financial management. His campaign has been organised around the WILD + S strategy, which focuses on welfare, improved communication, research and digital solutions, discipline and security.

He has also proposed stronger welfare structures and greater use of research and digital tools in party administration.

The General Secretary election therefore brings together four candidates with distinct political and professional experiences.

While their approaches differ, each has presented organisational development, grassroots engagement and preparation for the 2028 election as important issues.

The NPP’s delegates will determine who takes responsibility for the party’s general secretariat as the organisation begins another phase of internal reorganisation.

The election will also form part of the broader process through which the party selects its national leadership for the period leading toward the next general election.

The profiles of the four aspirants provide delegates and party members with information about their backgrounds, previous roles and stated priorities, while the final choice will be determined through the party’s internal electoral process.
