Construction of the much-anticipated Ga Odumase Market in the Ga West Municipality has officially commenced following a sod-cutting ceremony held on Friday, September 25, 2026.
The new market is expected to provide traders with a safer, cleaner and more organised space for commercial activities while creating opportunities for local economic growth and improved livelihoods.
Representing the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs at the ceremony, Deputy Minister Rita Naa Odoley Sowah said the project demonstrates government’s commitment to inclusive development, improved service delivery and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive at the local level.
She said modern market infrastructure was essential to supporting traders, particularly women and small-scale businesses, while improving revenue mobilisation for the Assembly and advancing the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
“This market will improve trading conditions, enhance safety, and provide economic opportunities for the people of Ga Odumase and its surrounding communities,” she stated.
Call for quality and effective supervision
Ms Sowah urged the contractor to execute the project to the required standards and complete the works within the agreed timeframe to ensure value for money.
She also tasked the Ga West Municipal Assembly with ensuring effective supervision and monitoring throughout the construction period to ensure that the project meets the required standards.
The Deputy Minister further called on residents and traders in Ga Odumase to take ownership of the facility and protect it for the benefit of current and future generations.
Residents and traders who attended the ceremony welcomed the project, describing it as a long-awaited intervention that would help address congestion, poor sanitation and inadequate trading spaces in the community.
When completed, the market is expected to accommodate hundreds of traders, improve sanitation and contribute to increased economic activity within the Ga West Municipality.
The project forms part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to improve local economic infrastructure and support livelihoods across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies nationwide.
